Film screening at Europe/Transalpina Square

In 1958, one of the most important Slovenian films was shot at the Nova Gorica railway station - Three Quarters of the Sun. As Marcel Štefančič says, not many films were shot in Nova Gorica, but this one counts as two. It was shot by the legendary director Jože Babič, who marked both Slovenian film and theatre with his work - he was also the founder of the SNG Nova Gorica. For the film Three Quarters of the Sun, he received the Golden Arena at the Yugoslav Film Festival in Pula.

The film tells the story of a group of camp inmates returning home by rail after World War II. Jože Babič also survived World War II in several German concentration camps, and in 1944 he managed to escape from Auschwitz. As part of the official program of the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025, on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 8:30 PM, we are preparing a very special film screening on Europe Square, from the original 35mm film, which will also be equipped with Italian subtitles and will thus bring together viewers from both sides of the currently open border. In case of rain, the screening will be postponed to the following day, September 1, 2025. In addition to the film, we would like to prepare a special exhibition at the Nova Gorica railway station, that is, at the location of the film. Despite the renovation, the Nova Gorica railway station and its iconic surroundings can be recognized in many photographs taken during the filming of the film and in the film itself. We also conceived the exhibition as a tribute to the railway station, which gained an important place in Slovenian culture with this film, and to give it a precious historical memory.
