Bovec Open-Air Cinema

ARC Island, Bovec Airport The traveling Cinema Isonzo / potujoči Kino Soča, a turquoise symbol of high-quality cinematic experiences, continues its journey along the emerald river. Until the end of summer, it will illuminate summer nights and bring the magic of cinema under the stars with film screenings and meetings with filmmakers. On Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 9:00 PM, we will host a film evening in Bovec with a screening of the documentary Once Upon a Time in the Soča Valley, created by director Ema Kugler, one of Slovenia's most important filmmakers and winner of the Prešeren Award for Lifetime Achievement. The event is organized by Kinoatelje in collaboration with the ARC Bovec. In case of rain, the screening will take place in the Stregulčeva house.

Once Upon a Time in the Soča Valley Ema Kugler, 2024, 90', SUB ENG It is unknown when the ancient religion emerged, but some mythical structures probably existed there even before the arrival of the ancient Slavs. Knowledge of the workings of the world was recounted and passed down from generation to generation, also in the form of mythical tales. Pavel Medvešček collected these traditions in the book From the Invisible Side of the Sky (Iz nevidne strani neba), published in 2007. He had to promise to publish the book only when both crescents of the moon were pointing towards the earth, and therefore, the book remained unpublished for 42 years. The documentary was produced by the production company Zavod Zank, with the support of the Slovenian Film Centre, RTV Slovenia, and the VIBA film studio, and is part of the GO! European Capital of Culture programme. 2025. The traveling Cinema Isonzo – Kino Soča, open since 2024, organizes open-air screenings in picturesque locations along the border, in collaboration with various partners in the region. The event is part of the Go Green Cinema project, which targets a broad cross-border audience, local residents, occasional foreign visitors, and participants in the official GO! 2025 program of the European Capital of Culture.
