VIATORES - Musical and interdisciplinary paths through the Isonzo bioregion / Tolmin

VIATORES is a six-stage journey through the areas marked by the Soča river. Each stage offers a nature or historical excursion accompanied by a guide and a concert with ancient instruments in one of the many ancient churches in the Isonzo area.

3.30 p.m. Tolminska Korita (Tolmin Gorge Park)

Meeting point: entrance to the Park

Guided tour of the Tolminska korita (Tolmin Gorge) nature reserve. The Tolmin gorges are picturesque gorges formed at the confluence of the Tolminka and Zadlaščica streams. The gorges are part of Slovenia's only national nature park, the Triglavski naravni park. The gorges represent the lowest altitudinal point in the entire park - which is mainly in the Alpine and pre-Alpine zone. Water over the millennia has forged irregular and magical shapes in the rocks. An attraction of the route is certainly an enormous boulder called ‘The Bear's Head’, wedged between two even more enormous boulders. A thermal water spring is also located within the protected area. The trail runs along an equipped path along which we can admire the typical vegetation of the Soča Valley, enriched by some endemic species such as the aconite, the Soča peverina and the rock fir.

Hiking time: approx. 1h 30m Light hiking shoes are recommended. Admission to the park: 10 euros, guide included.

WARNING: as this is a guided tour, the number of participants is limited and booking is compulsory! A transport service will be available with departure and return from Gorizia at a cost yet to be defined and only by reservation at the following addresses info@dramsam.org +39 338 188 2364

6.30 p.m. St Ulderico Cemetery Church

The Church of St Hilderic is the largest monument of Late Gothic painting in the north of Gorizia, belonging to the ‘Carniolan Gothic’ iconographic type and a product of the Gorenjska workshops in the second half of the 15th century. In the sails of the presbytery, next to Christ in the mandorla are the symbols of the Evangelists and angels with musical instruments. A lecture by Andrea Bojc, an art historian, on the history of the church and the 15th-century frescoes it contains.

To follow: Concert by the Dramsam Ensemble: Non fu mai più bel sollazzo I music and popular devotion between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Beginning in the 9th century, forms of popular devotion began to emerge that would find massive diffusion with the Franciscan movement of the 13th century and with the birth of the confraternities, groups of faithful that adopted forms of prayer and devotion often far removed from the officiality of ecclesiastical rites. The salient feature of these extraliturgical forms of prayer is the use of everyday language for texts accompanied by music, a form called ‘lauda’ that continued to be practised until the 18th century and that often relied on popular musical repertoires, including dance. The programme presents the different forms of lauda practised from the late Middle Ages to the late Renaissance. The concert is accompanied by detailed information on the sources, the musical instruments used (all faithful copies of the instruments in use at the time), and the functions and characteristics of the laudatory repertoire.
