"You are here: Gorizia in the collections of the Provincial Museums"

The multicultural identity of the Gorizia region on exhibition at the Provincial Museums: a journey through imperial parchments, maps, paintings, and photographs.

The cultural identity of Gorizia is revealed through centuries-old collections in its Provincial Museums. Imperial parchments, historic maps and atlases trace its geopolitical evolution, while paintings, photographs and postcards capture the city’s face. An extraordinary late-19th-century Hugo Charlemont still life celebrates the region’s famed fruit and viticulture, once known as the “Garden of Austria”. As a borderland, Gorizia’s multicultural and multilingual heritage emerges in its cookery, theatre posters, multilingual print culture and prestigious Jesuit, Ursuline and Staatsgymnasium schools. Its rich artistic legacy – from Tominz’s symbolic "Self-Portrait with Brother Francesco", which unites Nova Gorica and Gorizia, to works by Crali, Pilon, Spazzapan and a vanguard of Giulian Futurists – reveals deep ties to Rome, Vienna, Paris, Munich and Venice. The narrative culminates with Zoran Mušič, linking this exhibition to "Zoran Mušič: The Zurich Room, the Works, the Atelier."
