Exhibition • The Gospel of Mark

In Aquileia for the first time after seven centuries the three fragments of the Gospel of Mark

The international exhibition of the Aquileia Foundation reconstructs one of the most important codices of medieval Europe in the place where its history began.

For the first time in nearly seven centuries, the three surviving parts of the Gospel of Mark, one of the most important codices of medieval Europe, will be together in Aquileia.

From September 13, 2026, to April 25, 2027, Palazzo Meizlik will host the exhibition "The Gospel of Mark. Seven Centuries. Three Fragments. A European Tale," promoted and organized by the Aquileia Foundation with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, and in collaboration with the Municipality of Aquileia, the Basilica of Aquileia, the National Archaeological Museum of Cividale del Friuli, part of the Historical Museum and Park of Miramare Castle - Regional Directorate of National Museums of Friuli Venezia Giulia, St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus in Prague, the Prague Castle Archives at the Chancellery of the Presidency of the Czech Republic, and the Archdiocese of Prague.

The project is the result of a complex cultural diplomacy effort promoted by the Aquileia Foundation, which has fostered a dialogue between Italian and Czech civil, religious, and museum institutions, making possible an operation of extraordinary scientific and symbolic value.

Among the most significant elements is the loan of the fragment belonging to the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus in Prague and the Cathedral Treasury, considered the indivisible heritage of the state and its people, which will leave Czech territory for the first time.
