THE CENTURY OF THE RITTER (1814–1914)

Industrialists, merchants, innovators, and benefactors: for over a century, the Ritter de Záhony family played a leading role in Gorizia's economic and social life, contributing to its transformation into a modern industrial center.

Arriving in the city in the early 19th century, they developed businesses ranging from sugar refining to textile production, from mills to paper mills, and even agriculture. They promoted the arrival of the railroad, led the Chamber of Commerce, held political offices, and supported important initiatives in education, social welfare, and charity.

But the Ritter family's history is also one of palaces and gardens, collections of art and antiquities, music and culture, which has left numerous traces in Gorizia and the surrounding area.

Through paintings, photographs, documents, personal objects, and testimonies from the Coronini collections and important museums, archives, and libraries in the region, the exhibition retraces the extraordinary story of a family that shaped an entire century of Gorizia's history, up until the outbreak of the Great War.

An opportunity to rediscover Gorizia through the history of one of the families who contributed most to its development.
