Aeroklub Gorica, in cooperation with Mestna občina Nova Gorica, organized the first cross-border event Aerorally Edvarda Rusjana to celebrate the great aviator and cyclist. The route was symbolic, from the airport in Rojce between Gorizia and Miren, where Edvard Rusjan first flew with his EDA I (1911), to Belgrade, where he was fatally injured. This year marks the 135th anniversary of the birth of the Slovenian-Italian #constructor and flight #pioneer Edvard Rusjan, who died in a plane crash in Belgrade. He and his brother made their first plane out of bamboo sticks and cardboard, while a year later (1909) he made his first flight with a #powered plane - just 6 years after the flight of the well-known Wright brothers from the USA. At the air show in Belgrade on January 9, 1911, Edvard Rusjan flew despite the very bad weather conditions, as he did not want to disappoint the #audience. A strong wind broke a wing of his plane, which crashed under the famous Kalamegdan fortress. His funeral in Belgrade was attended by a large crowd of about 14,000 people. For the next year’s edition, the Aeroklub Gorica is planning an extended #European rally, which will become traditional. The real borderlessHEROs!
