How Can Intercultural Mediation Improve Health and Healthcare?

How Can Intercultural Mediation Improve Health and Healthcare?

On 20 November 2025, at 18:00, a round-table will take place at the Knjigarna kavarna Maks about the challenges faced by those who enter the Slovenian healthcare system without speaking Slovene.

The guests will discuss the communication and other challenges faced by individuals who do not share the language of healthcare providers. In such cases, one effective strategy to bridge the communication gap is intercultural mediation. The round table, bringing together NGO representatives, intercultural mediators from Slovenia and Italy, and researchers of intercultural mediation, will explore the possibilities, benefits, and obstacles related to the successful implementation of intercultural mediation in healthcare settings.

Participants:

  • Mirna Buić, project manager (PINA),
  • Juš Škraban, researcher (Social Protection Institute of the Republic of Slovenia)
  • Mira Grabanica, intercultural mediator,
  • Uršula Lipovec Čebron, antropologist (University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts),
  • Daniela Mannu, regional coordinator for anti-trafficking network of Friuli Venezia Gulia,
  • Letonde Hermine Gbedo, intercultural mediator and coordinator of anti-trafficking project in Trieste (Comitati per i Dirriti Civili delle Prostitute Aps).

Moderated by Martina Bofulin (ZRC SAZU).

The discussion will be held in Slovenian and Italian with simultaneous interpretation.
