Sinagogue

Built in 1756, the Synagogue was used by the Jewish community of Gorizia until that year. In 1978, the Trieste community donated the abandoned building to the Municipality for restoration and use for Jewish cultural activities. After a series of major restoration works, the Synagogue was reopened in 1984. Currently, the Synagogue is not used for worship.

The synagogue on Via Ascoli is open on Sundays and holidays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm , always with free admission. For those wishing to visit, openings on other days can also be arranged for groups of at least five people. To make reservations, call the dedicated number 0481 383750, Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The Ashkenazi synagogue was built in the second half of the 18th century. In 1894, following the demolition of several houses in the Ghetto, the entrance courtyard was built, preceded by the main door topped by a pediment that still faces Via Ascoli. Upon entering, a plaque commemorates the Jews deported in 1943, and next to it, a dedicated sculpture by Simon Benetton can be admired.

Behind the building, the garden is named after Bruno Faber, the infant from Gorizia who was deported to Auschwitz in 1943, from where he never returned.

The Temple retains the profound charm of a timeless place, given that few changes have taken place since the eighteenth century: the large hall is overlooked by a sumptuous wooden gallery with a balcony, and thanks to large windows and two splendid wrought-iron chandeliers, the Synagogue is particularly bright.

To the side are the wooden benches for the faithful, and on the back wall is the tabernacle, made up of four twisted columns in dark marble and protected by a gilded wrought iron balustrade. Inside was placed the scroll of the Holy Scriptures, or the Torah, while on the opposite side was a raised platform for those who read the Scriptures during the rites.

The room dedicated to the philosopher Carlo Michelstaedter (Gorizia 1887-1910) was conceived and created by the Municipality of Gorizia as part of its efforts to enhance and enrich the collections of the Synagogue's architectural-museum complex and the history of Judaism in the Gorizia area. It is part of a broader exhibition entitled "Jerusalem on the Isonzo," part of a celebration of the city's millennium, celebrated in 2001.

Since November 2025, a selection of the most significant paintings from the Michelstaedter Collection, established with the donation of drawings, paintings, manuscripts, and publications to the Civic Library of Gorizia, has been made available to the public again.

The temple on Via Ascoli is open on Sundays and holidays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, always with free admission. For those wishing to visit, including the Michelstaedter Room, openings can be arranged on other days for groups of at least five people. To make reservations, call 0481 383750, Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
