Tribute to a Vision Cross-border Film Festival

Tribute to a Vision Cross-border Film Festival

A lively events at the 25th edition of the film festival.

The cross-border film festival Poklon Vizija (Homage to the Vision), which Kinoatelje is organising in cooperation with numerous partners, will continue to permeate the Gorizia region with socially engaged cinema by renowned and young filmmakers in 2024. This year, we will mark the 25th anniversary of the Darko Bratina Award at the festival, which carries a message about the transformative, humanistic and poetic power of cinematic images.

The opening evening will take place on Tuesday, 7 October 18:00 at the Kulturni dom Nova Gorica, featuring the Slovenian premiere of Še eno rundo, pa greva (Le città di pianura, 2025, 98’), by one of the most promising young filmmakers, Francesco Sossai, whose latest film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The evening will begin with a welcome address by Stojan Pelko, program director of GO! 2025. After the screening, at 21:00, we will move to the EPIC district, specifically to the railway underpass of Nova Gorica station, where, inside the Ingeborg Bachmann dome, the video installation Horizons will be inaugurated in collaboration with the K3 Film Festival from Villach.

This year, the Darko Bratina Award will be presented to two filmmakers – the Hungarian film virtuoso Béla Tarr and Yervant Gianikian, who worked in tandem with Angela Ricci Lucchi. Saturday, 11 October, will be dedicated to Yervant Gianikian: at the Kinemax in Gorizia, audiences will be able to see Prigionieri della guerra (Prisoners of War) and his latest film Diari di Angela – Noi due cineasti – Capitolo, followed by a masterclass. Before that, on Wednesday, 8 October, at 20:30 in the Kulturni dom Nova Gorica, there will be a screening of Frente a Guernica.

On Sunday, 12 October, we will honor Béla Tarr with an exclusive screening of his monumental masterpiece Sátántangó (1994, 7h 19min), preceded by an introductory lecture by Aljaž Škrlep. To help you endure the cinematic ecstasy, a refreshment break will also be provided. Béla Tarr will join us after the festival, in the second half of November, when he will lead a masterclass. On that occasion, we will present him with the Darko Bratina Award in person. The exact date will be announced soon.

Another masterclass is also on the horizon: on Friday, 10 October, at the Kinemax, renowned cinematographer and filmmaker Daniele Ciprì will guide participants through his beginnings with low-budget cameras and his later adaptation to new technologies, including AI tools and collaborations with major directors such as Marco Bellocchio. You can register for the event at this link.

If you are interested in how artificial intelligence is transforming culture and film—not only from a technical but also from an ethical, environmental, and social perspective—then mark your calendars for Wednesday, 8 October, when from 9:00 to 13:30 at Kinemax the International Forum "Sustainable Digital Transformation for Creativity" will take place, co-organized with Motovila (Creative Europe Desk Slovenia). This event also serves as the final activity of the Go Green Cinema project within the framework of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorica. You can register for the event at this link.

In the spirit of expanding the programme, which is taking place in the context of the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025, and with the desire to bring groundbreaking authors to our region, we have expanded the programme in 2023 with the Visionaries section. The aim is to highlight bold and innovative works by European directors. This year, these are the authors of one short film, one fiction and one documentary feature.
