Tomi Janežič: 1979 / 1980

Episode eight and nine from Dodecalogy 1972–1983 by Tomi Janežič.
1979 / 1980 are the eighth and ninth author projects of Tomi Janežič’s Dodecalogy 1972–1983, the largest artistic project of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia. Staged as a pair, the two performances discuss memory and the coming-of-age of people from a small village that becomes a crossroad of destinies.
1979 / 1980 are a transgenerational documentary fiction based on the personal stories of the artists. It is a story from the seventies, centred around the homes of the era and interwoven with many local and global events that connect the Nova Gorica region to numerous places across the world.
They are part of the Dodecalogy 1972–1983 (within the Destin(y)ation / Touch of Destiny project), a year-long theatrical omnibus composed of twelve projects, created under the direction of Tomi Janežič in Nova Gorica, Ljubljana, Timișoara, Ivano-Frankivsk, Novi Sad, and within the Creative Center Krušče. The Dodecalogy sketches a network of life stories stretching across time, marked by journeys and migrations. Above all, it is an omnibus about theatre itself.
Velcro was invented during the Second World War in Switzerland. While elsewhere in Europe people were killing each other, a man went hiking in the mountains with his dog, picking flowers and mushrooms. When he came home, he noticed something stuck to his clothes, and his dog’s fur was full of it too. It was burdock. Why did it cling to the fabric?
Imagine the luxury of quietly sitting down to look at a burdock flower under a microscope while Hitler was invading Russia. On the flower were tiny hooks. The man thought: "Maybe I can make artificial hooks, like those on burdock". It took him more than ten years to create the velcro we know today.
He patented it, and the patent expired in 1979. From 1980 onwards, velcro began to appear everywhere. But someone already had it in the fifties, when it was still almost unknown. And apparently, it changed that person’s life.
