SIOR TODERO BRONTOLON

SIOR TODERO BRONTOLON

A new interpretation of Goldoni and a classic of Italian theater, directed by Pablo Valerio featuring the extraordinary performance of Franco Branciaroli.

"Sior Todero Brontolòn", written in 1761, was met with enthusiasm and enjoyed ten additional performances.

Sior Todero, as a character, follows the tradition of the rusteghi, but unlike the four grumpy Venetians, he completely lacks any benevolent qualities. The play presents him as greedy, domineering, rude to his servants, oppressive toward his son and granddaughter, distrustful, and yet oddly sensitive to the world around him.

Now, this indefensible old "grumbler" has drawn the attention of a contemporary master of the stage, Franco Branciaroli, who – under the direction of Paolo Valerio – will bring a fresh, extraordinary, and unexpected interpretation to life.

Following their bold and irreverent take on Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, Paolo Valerio and Franco Branciaroli will surprise audiences once again with a new perspective on a classic of Italian theatre – one that still speaks powerfully to modern sensibilities.

In light of such a commanding and compelling protagonist, it is worth considering the subtle yet pivotal role that Goldoni assigns to the female characters – the only truly positive figures in the play’s dramatic arc. In the end, love is restored in its most generous and authentic form. Yet, in a time when "patriarchy" dominates headlines in its most distorted and troubling interpretations, the resolution of the play leaves us with a mix of satisfaction and lingering unease.
