Borders: from Gauguin to Hopper

The exhibition features over 100 masterpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries by artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse, and Rothko. A journey conceived by Marco Goldin to explore the concept of boundaries as physical, inner, and symbolic spaces.

Part of the official GO! 2025 programme, Confini: from Gauguin to Hopper is the flagship exhibition at Villa Manin from 11 October 2025 to 12 April 2026, bringing together over one hundred masterpieces by some of the most celebrated artists of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The result of years of research, in‑depth reading and Marco Goldin’s passionate sensitivity for painting, the exhibition unfolds through a series of thematic sections in which the notion of “boundary” becomes both a metaphor for the infinite and a meeting place: from the boundless skies of Friedrich and Monet to the vast seas of Turner and Courbet; from Segantini’s mountains to the inner landscapes of Van Gogh and Munch; and on to Gauguin’s exotic dreams and Monet’s vibrant gardens.

Within the vast, restored spaces of the Esedra di Levante, Villa Manin offers an extraordinary journey through two centuries of art history. The show features romantics and impressionists such as Friedrich, Turner, Manet, Monet, Degas and Pissarro; post‑impressionists Van Gogh, Cézanne and Gauguin; protagonists of the early 20th‑century avant‑garde – Munch, Modigliani, Matisse, Mondrian and Bonnard; and, finally, Hopper, Bacon, Giacometti, Rothko, culminating in Kiefer’s contemporary neo‑expressionism.
