GIARDINI PUBBLICI

This central green space is home to centuries-old trees that are part of the city's history, such as the monumental 158-year-old magnolia, much loved by the poet Umberto Saba, whose distinctive shape makes it unique in Italy.

Originally owned by the de Grazia family, the garden was purchased by the municipality of Gorizia around 1860 and, once the landscaping work was completed in 1863, became Gorizia's first public green space.

Towards the end of the 19th century, it was enriched with a fountain donated by Count Samuel Gyulai, an Austro-Hungarian marshal, and a Central European-style meteorological station.

The park also hosts numerous busts dedicated to illustrious figures linked to the area.

Like all gardens conceived and designed in Austrian style, it boasts the presence of a wide variety of trees including holm oaks, plane trees, a Ginkgo Biloba and the aforementioned monumental magnolia.
