GORIZIA
Topographies of Memory

An open-air museum that traces the history of 20th-century Europe through the memories of the inhabitants of Gorizia and Nova Gorica. A physical, conceptual, and multimedia journey.
In the early 20th century, most of the inhabitants of Gorizia spoke four languages, using them in different contexts such as the home, work and town life. When asked, “so, were you Slovenes, Italians, Germans or Friulans?”, the oldest citizens simply replied, “we were Goriziani”.This outdoor museum starts here, tracing the history of 20th century Europe through the memories of the inhabitants of Gorizia, the town that, more than any other, experienced the events of the last century, from the Great War to the Iron Curtain. The tour is in 10 stages: six in Gorizia, in the part of the town that is now in Italian territory, and four in Nova Gorica, the part that is in Slovenia. At each stage, an information totem has been installed that briefly describes the context, invites you to observe the surroundings and offers the opportunity to access multi-media content using a QRcode. It is not only a conceptual tour but also a physical one, as it includes places and monuments that represent the history of this border town.
The tour was devised and is still run by the Associazione Quarantasettezeroquattro, which also organises guided tours for students and groups.
