Six Years of War, One Day of Liberation

Exhibition of historic newspaper front pages from 1939 to 1945, with talks on war reporting, contemporary conflicts, and the preservation of historical memory.
The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the Liberation from Nazifascism and the end of the Second World War – a moment to reflect on the enduring values of antifascism, freedom, peace, human rights, and democracy.
The exhibition “Six Years of War, One Day of Liberation”, curated by journalist Ali Žerdin, presents a selection of newspaper front pages from 1939 to 1945, tracing the rise, escalation, and end of the global conflict. The display includes both clandestine publications and mass-circulation papers, offering diverse political perspectives and striking parallels with the present.
A series of talks will accompany the exhibition:
- Thursday 9 October, 6 p.m.: "War Correspondents" with Ali Žerdin and Ervin Hladnik Milharčič, on how wars are portrayed in journalism (in Slovene).
- Wednesday 15 October, 6 p.m.: "Chroniclers Across Time" with Andrea Bellavite and Marko Marinčič, discussing today’s conflict zones – Gaza, Ukraine, and beyond (in Slovene and Italian).
- Thursday 23 October, 6 p.m.: "Chroniclers of Memory" with Kaja Širok and Alessandro Cattunar, on the importance of personal testimony in historiography (in Italian).
The exhibition is open until 23 October during library opening hours (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. / 3 p.m.-6 p.m.). Free admission.
