Piccolo Opera Festival: "Rita"

Piccolo Opera Festival: "Rita"

At the festival celebrating opera and vocal music, a new and original version of Donizetti’s opera takes the stage, uniquely set in a Japanese dōjō. The production is directed by artist Anna Etsuko Tsuri.

As part of the official GO! 2025 programme, Piccolo Opera Festival presents a new production, supported by EU Japan Fest and ZTKMS Brda.

This one-act comic opera by Donizetti was composed in Paris between 1839 and 1841 but premiered posthumously in 1860 at the Opéra-Comique under the title "Rita". Based on a vaudeville by Gustave Vaëz, the opera features three roles: Rita (soprano), Beppe (tenor), and Gasparo (baritone), in a humorous love triangle.

This new staging, directed by Anna Etsuko Tsuri and presented during GO! 2025 with support from EU Japan Fest, relocates the setting from an Italian tavern to an early 20th-century Japanese martial arts dōjō. The production explores themes of harmony and respect through martial arts philosophy, contrasting hierarchical social structures with a vision of mutual respect and peaceful strength. The cast includes Claudia Ceraulo (Rita), Manuel Miro Caputo (Beppe), and Francesco Bossi (Gasparo), with Jimmy Chiang as musical director and the Go! Borderless Orchestra.

Tickets: €18 full price; €15 reduced; €9 for Collio/Brda residents and under 26. Reservation recommended at tickets@piccolofestival.org.
