Mondo Mizuki, Mondo Yokai

The first Italian retrospective exhibition dedicated to Shigeru Mizuki, master of Japanese manga: original panels, historical materials, and an unpublished volume reveal his visionary universe.

From April 26 to August 30 at Casa Cavazzini, curated by Canicola, Vincenzo Filosa and MIZUKI PRO, Tokyo.

The first retrospective exhibition in Italy dedicated to Shigeru Mizuki, one of the greatest masters of Japanese manga, features around one hundred original panels – many shown outside Japan for the first time – alongside reproductions, magazines, books, video materials, and critical essays.

On this occasion, Canicola publishes Il mondo delle fessure rotonde, the first anthology in the West to present previously unpublished comic stories together with autobiographical writings and reflections on Mizuki’s manga language. These texts were originally published between 1966 and 1980 in the celebrated magazine Garo, a landmark for alternative manga and a training ground for many experimental authors. The book is a gateway to creatures and legends of ancient times, which Mizuki transposed into the depths of modern Japan’s great metropolises. Talking warts, ninja clones, charlatan alchemists and flying capes populate these stories – still unpublished outside Japan – offering the Italian public insight into the thought and art of this extraordinary author.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with a valid museum ticket.
