The Drežnica Goat and its People

Marko Kumer Murč / Rusaalka, Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, Film Factory / 51' / 2025 Synopsis On the steep and inaccessible cliffs of Northern Primorska lives the only indigenous Slovenian breed of goat – the Drežnica goat. Its species is endangered, and its extinction would mean the end of generations of long-lasting harmony between man and nature. The film reveals the natural environment of the Drežnica goat and the stories of local breeders and breeders who pass on their knowledge from generation to generation and with their voices try to prevent the Drežnica goat from becoming extinct. "Genetic research shows how the Drežnica goat is truly special and different from other breeds. Preserving this genetics will be key to further sustainable farming, especially due to climate change. The time may come very soon when the old knowledge about food production will be very useful to us. In this case, we have a goat that can live in an area where virtually no other animal can. These are also goats that feed on mountain flowers – you can't get a healthier cheese." - Simon Horvat, screenwriter of the film, professor at the Biotechnical Faculty and genetics expert
