Milko Bambič: In the state of birth

Radovan Čok, 2024, Slovenia, Republic of Serbia, 50'

The film, with its very special strokes of light lines, reveals the life and work of Milko Bambič, a Slovenian artist who was a key figure in the Trieste art scene in his time. "Starting with Fauvism (from the French word for wild) through Futurism and Fascism to other 'isms', the 20th century is a brutal space in which Milko Bambič remains an elusive protagonist. I can easily imagine Bambič as one of Vladimir Bartol's characters. Sitting on Al-Araf, with one foot on one side and the other on the other side of the wall of knowledge, he plays the violin while a strong wind blows." - director Radovan Čok. Milko Bambič (1905—1991) was a painter, illustrator, polyglot, polymath, inventor, art critic, writer, pioneer of Slovenian comics and caricature, who moved between Trieste, Idrija, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade and back to Trieste. The film depicts a controversial artist who has remained almost unknown to this day. Among his many achievements, Bambič designed the art equipment for Radenska mineral water in 1931. In 1927, he published the anti-fascist satirical picture book "Bu-ci-bu" in the monthly magazine "Naš glas", the first Slovenian comic strip that predicted the downfall of Benito Mussolini. The film will present the playful and independent personality of Bambič, who was already creating at a time when certain artistic professions did not yet exist. The traveling Kino Soča - Isonzo Cinema, which runs from 2024, is setting up annual cinemas in picturesque locations along the border, in cooperation with key partners from the region.

The event is part of the Go Green Cinema project, which addresses the wider cross-border public, local residents, random foreign visitors and participants within the official programme of the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025. It is produced with the support of the European Union from the GO! 2025 Small Project Fund of the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia programme 2021-2027, managed by the EGTC GO. www.ita-slo.eu & www.euro-go.eu/spf
