TRIESTE 1954

TRIESTE 1954

"Everything is double in Trieste, like the 'sullen grace' in Saba's verses," says Simone Cristicchi in the opening scenes of "Trieste 1954," directed by Paolo Valerio and produced to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Trieste's reunification with Italy.

It's fast and practical, yet so long immobilized. And then, "double time." With Italy liberated and Her, who, according to historians, has more liberations: from the Nazis, from the Yugoslavian troops, from the Anglo-Americans. Italy celebrating the end of the war in 1945, and Her doing so nine years later, returning to Italy.

And perhaps this is what I appreciate most about the people of Trieste: that they have learned to live like this (…) remaining standing in the midst of the storm of events, courageously facing changes, the sudden gusts of history."

To reconstruct these nine years, little known to the rest of Italy, through a smile, comes the character of Persichetti—the Roman archivist of “Magazzino 18”—who in the new show wants to take his wife Adele to Trieste, stumbling upon this very particular page of history.

It is revived by intersecting the acting with interesting video contributions made available by Rai FVG and other historical archives and the beautiful music of Maestro Valter Sivilotti.
