Discussion evening: Milling in Vipava valley

Discussion evening: Milling in Vipava valley

"Where there was a stream, there was a mill!"—discussion on the heritage of milling in Vipava Valley.

The history of milling is closely related to the acquisition of technical knowledge and mastery of natural energy sources such as water and wind. Milling is one of the oldest crafts. The first information about mills in the Vipava Valley dates back to the 15th century. "Where there was a stream, there was a mill," say the older residents of Vipava, who still remember the mills on the river Vipava and its tributaries, the work of the millers and various adventures on the way to the mill.

You are cordially invited to a discussion evening, where we will think about what milling means to us in the modern world, how to involve young people in heritage research and why it is important to preserve the decaying milling heritage for future generations. The participants are:

  • Boris Blažko, researcher of the history, crafts and other cultural heritage of Lokavec,
  • Tanja Maver Jamšek, co-supervisor of the research project of the pupils of the Dobravlje Primary School, Vrtovin School, entitled Malni, žage in fužine na Vrtovinščku – Zbirka spominov in pričevanj Vrtovincev (Mills, and Sawmills at Vrtovinšček—A Collection of Memories and Testimonies of the Vrtovin People,
  • Ivan Krašna, co-author of the book Mlini in žage na potoku Šumljaku (Mills and Sawmills on the Šumljak Stream) (2009) in Budanje,
  • alerija Jevšnik, tutor of educational workshops in Garaža, Ajdovščina.
  • The discussion will be coordinated by Jasna Fakin Bajec (ethnologist and historian, ZRC SAZU and UNG).
