Clay Design Course

Creative workshops on clay design in Xcenter.
The workshops will take place on three consecutive Thursdays at 16:30 at Xcenter in Nova Gorica. You can register for the whole series (3 sessions) or attend only the workshop that appeals to you the most. During each session, we will learn a specific technique and create new products, focusing on the basics of ceramics—the whole process, from shaping, drying, baking, glazing and re-baking. We will learn the basic techniques of hand-building clay, which are the basis for further creation. We will work with high-temperature clay—a stoneware that enables the production of high-quality and aesthetic products. You will learn how to make functional and decorative products. The workshop will take you from your first interactions with clay to the finished product that you will take home.
PROGRAMME
Thursday 13 March 2025: making cups using the pinching technique. We will learn about this ancient technique in which clay is shaped exclusively with our hands. This method is characterised by its focus on natural and organic forms, which allows for a very intimate approach to clay design. We will use the technique to create simple but functional vessels. Today, this technique is popular for its natural and hand-formed look, which keeps each piece authentic.
Thursday 20 March 2025: making a larger vase using the coil technique. We will learn about this popular hand technique that can be used to create larger and slightly more complex shapes. With this technique, we will learn how to build a stable structure while developing a sense of proportion and form. We will make a larger vase that is not only useful, but also a decorative piece that adds a touch to a room.
Thursday 27 March 2025: making plates, bowls or tiles using the slab technique. This technique is one of the basic methods for creating flat and stable surfaces. With this technique, clay is rolled to a uniform thickness, allowing the production of a variety of objects with simple tools. The technique is excellent for beginners as it offers a wide range of possibilities for experimentation with shape and decoration. We will learn how to make plates, bowls and decorative tiles.
Glaze and firing
Your products will be finished and kiln-fired by the course leader in her studio. Firstly, using a first or biscuit firing (baking at 980 °C), then glazing each piece individually and again firing at over 1200 °C, which guarantees strength and high quality. The products will be ready for pick up and home use two weeks after the workshop.
The number of participants is limited and registration is required at iris.plesnar@gmail.com. The course is led by Iris Plešnar, who has many years of experience in ceramics making, painting and teaching.
The price of the course is €75 for a single workshop (2 h) and € 190 for the whole set (3 meetings of 2 h). The price includes all necessary materials (clay, glazes, tools), professional guidance, baking the products twice, hand-glazing the products and room rent. Gift vouchers are also available for those who would like to give the course to someone as a gift.
