26th Hike: Peternel–Korada–Peternel

Hike to Korada.

This is our oldest hike, which we have been organizing since the founding of our mountaineering association. It takes place as part of the commemorative ceremony at Peternel. The hike begins and ends at the site where, during the Second World War, 22 people were burned alive in a house.

The trail is circular. Part of the route follows a tourist trail we named Trcinka. From Peternel, we head toward Korada through the village of Nozno, where we take a short break. The hike continues above the abandoned village of Slapnik, and through the cool forest we reach the ridge road of Kanalski Kolovrat, stretching from Vrhovlje all the way to Livek. From the road, wide views open over the Friulian plain. On the left, we can see the sea, ahead are the foothills of the Dolomites, and to the right the Carnic Alps. We soon switch to a mountain trail that leads us to the Mountain Shelter on Korada (802 m). The first part of the path is behind us, and here we can take a longer rest and refresh ourselves.

From Korada, we descend off-trail to the northwest of the mountain hut.
Our next activity is flower picking, to make a wreath that we later take to the monument at Peternel. Traditionally, we pick lily-of-the-valley, which blooms at this time. Each participant gathers their own small bouquet. We slowly descend toward Vrhovlje pri Kožbani.
We stop at the Church of St. Andrew, from where one of the most beautiful views of Brda unfolds.
There, the flowers gathered along the way are woven into special wreaths, which are different every year. Visitors can also enter the small church.

The Church of St. Andrew boasts the oldest frescoes in the Brda region.
They decorate the presbytery and the triumphal arch wall, depicting scenes from the Holy Family, saints, and apostles. Especially interesting are the angels playing various musical instruments from the second half of the 15th century. One instrument is particularly intriguing—you’ll have to discover which one yourself. The church stands above the village and belongs to the coastal architectural type, with a covered porch (lopa) and a bell-gable.

We continue descending and stop at the Bajet farm above Hlevnik.
This final rest before the destination helps us synchronize our arrival at Peternel with the start of the commemorative ceremony. Upon reaching the event site, we wait in an organized manner for the moment when the wreath we made is brought to the monument. And so we conclude another pleasant day in the company of friends.

This is a unique hike. Along the way, there are several stations and various activities in which all participants take part. The purpose of the hike is also special, which is why we dedicate the whole day to it.
