The Solidarity Festival

The Solidarity Festival

Since 2006, the “Diamo un taglio alla sete” project has supported Brother Dario’s mission in Kenya with a solidarity wine. Every year, in Nimis, a festival and tastings celebrate solidarity.

Our story It all began in 2006 with Anna Laurencig's trip to Kenya. Destination an arid region far from tourist destinations: Turkana, where her cousin Dario Laurencig, a Combonian lay missionary originally from the Natisone Valleys, has lived and worked for more than 40 years. In Turkana, in Lokichar, where Brother Dario has set up a Center for disabled children named after Pope John Paul II, Anna stays for a month or more. When she returns home, she tells friends about her experience and shows a photo report: the desert landscape of Turkana, the mission in Lokichar, the drilling of wells... From those photos comes a calendar, distributed against donations to be given to Brother Dario's works. The calendar is featured at the annual dinner of a group of oenologists, from the sixth oenology class of the agricultural institute of Cividale del Friuli, who graduated in 1994 and cemented their friendship by keeping the commitment to get together every year. It is from that group (called “Out of Sixth”) that the project DIAMO UN TAGLIO ALLA SETE was born: a “solidarity wine,” an off-the-shelf blend, distributed in exchange for an offering destined for Brother Dario. The wine is the result of a great contest of generosity: the winemakers offer the raw material and their suppliers provide everything else for free: bottles, corks, labels, packaging... Since 2006, more than 500 thousand euros have been collected, nearly 50 thousand bottles and more than 4 thousand magnums have been produced. In 16 years many friends have joined Anna and the “Out of Sixths”; in 2016 a Volunteer Organization, the Let's Cut the Thirst FVG ODV, was born from the project. Every year, on the second weekend of June, the “Solidarity Festival” is held in Nimis: an opportunity to get together in joy and, at the same time, promote and distribute the wine of solidarity.
