A journey through the places, people, and historical events that have marked the development of the fortified city of Palmanova: from its origins to the present day, from the reasons that led the Republic of Venice to found the settlement in 1593 to the French domination with Napoleon Bonaparte, who came to Palmanova twice and reinforced and extended the fortifications, to the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Unification of Italy, to the World Wars of the 20th century, to the years of demilitarisation at the end of the last century and the new tourist vocation of this historical site.

On the journey, you will encounter four remarkable characters who have defined the history of the Star-shaped city: Giulio Savorgnan, a Venetian engineer who designed the Fortress, Marc'Antonio Barbaro, the first General Superintendent during the years of the establishment of Palmanova, General Francois de Chasseloup-Laubat, a French officer who served during the Napoleonic era, and Giulia Calame, Gustavo Modena's partner, who witnessed the uprisings of the movement for the Unification of Italy in the year 1848 and the Austrian siege.

A model of the fortress on a scale of 1:1000 will help you to understand the articulated "modern style" defensive structure, whose perfection and uniqueness earned Palmanova the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017 as part of the transnational site "Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries:  Stato da Terra – Western Stato da Mar", together with the cities of Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda, Zara and Šibenik (Croatia) and Kotor (Montenegro).
