You can explore it independently, optionally renting an audio guide, or by booking a guided tour in advance. The trails within the Isola della Cona, accessible only on foot, are: The Ring Trail, a total of 2 km The United World Trail, leading to Punta Spigolo, with a total round-trip length of 10 km As you explore the reserve, you will pass through freshwater marshes, extensive saltwater wetlands, reed beds, forests, and grasslands. The starting point is the visitor center, one of the most important sites for education, research, and nature observation at an international level, located in the heart of the Reserve, on the Isola della Cona.
A Paradise for Birdwatching
Recognized as the best birdwatching area in Italy, the Isonzo River Mouth Reserve is an ideal habitat for many animal species, especially resident and migratory birds. Visitors can observe the rich birdlife from numerous screened observation points and two large observatories. Photography hides are available only by reservation and require a fee.
Camargue Horses in the Reserve
The integrity of the area is maintained through continuous environmental management efforts, supported by the animals themselves, such as the Camargue horses that roam freely within the Reserve and help control vegetation growth. Visitors can book horse-related activities, including close encounters suitable for young children, riding lessons, and guided horseback excursions.
Facilities and Nearby Trails
Since its establishment in 1996, the Reserve has developed services and facilities to welcome visitors in its final section, the Isola della Cona, which is accessible only on foot with a valid entry ticket. In the surrounding area, cycling paths allow easy access to sites of great natural value, such as Bosco Alberoni.
