Fojba na Bazovici

To je bil opuščen rudniški jašek, zdaj pa je kraj spomina za družine žrtev fojb in koncentracijskih taborišč na območju nekdanje Jugoslavije.

The Foiba of Basovizza, a mine shaft in disuse, is one of the natural sinkholes scattered on Trieste's Karst Plateau where, in the years around 1945, thousands of people were killed. Here, like in the other foibe present in the territory of Trieste and Slovenia, many civilians and soldiers (many of whom were still alive) were thrown by the various armies taking part in the Second World War. Moreover, at the end of the war, the Yugoslav army used these sinkholes to eliminate many of the people taken prisoner.

After the requests from Italian public opinion, the Anglo-Americans started a partial recovery of the human remains of the Foiba of Basovizza.

The sinkhole was closed in 1959 and, after many vicissitudes, in 1992 it was declared a National Monument.

Since 2007 the Memorial of Basovizza has taken a new look. Moreover, the Documentation Centre has been created close to it, where you will find all the information concerning the Foiba and the tragic events of those years.

Today the Foiba of Basovizza is a Memorial Site for the families of those who died in the foibe and of the deportees who died in the concentration camps of ex Yugoslavia.
