Maša Klavora: Together on the path to peace

Director of the Pot miru / Walk of Peace Foundation, an activist and coordinator who believes in the Soča Valley, its natural and cultural-historical values and potentials. She believes in intergenerational, cross-sectoral and cross-border cooperation and in acting honestly, responsibly and transparently for the public good.

Maša is a professor of physical education. “It was sport that gave me a very important foundation – to be honest with myself and others, to have a lot of energy and to work hard towards my own or a common goal.” She started her career in the Tolmin Students' Club, has been a member, coach or president of various sports, tourism or history associations and federations, civic initiatives, she was elected to the Tolmin Municipal Council, served as Vice-Mayor and as Mayor.

In recent years, the Foundation has together with many Slovenian and Italian institutions and individuals created a 500-kilometre cross-border cultural and walking trail, the Walk of Peace that runs from the Alps to the Adriatic sea and is considered one of the best regional and cross-border initiatives, projects, programmes. The First World War heritage in Slovenia has been inscribed on the UNESCO Tentative List, and together with partners from several European countries, they are slowly creating a European Walk of Peace to connect the places marked by the First World War over 100 years ago.

Just tomorrow, on Friday 16 February, a special event in Kobarid will put this story on a pedestal – the story that has spread from a local initiative to a cross-border area and has now become a European initiative. The Walk of Peace is part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica-Gorizia. We will jointly develop two sub-projects within the framework of the existing project, namely the research and inventory of Austro-Hungarian cemeteries and Italian tombs along the Walk of Peace, and the Park of Nations with cultural events being organised and a guidebook being created.

Don't miss out our upcoming events! Sign up for the GO! 2025 newsletter to find out about all our initiatives.
