Workshops on playing the world’s oldest flute

Between 16 and 21 October 2025, workshops on playing the world’s oldest flute will be held for students of the music schools of Idrija, Cerkno, Tolmin, and Nova Gorica.

In cooperation with the music schools of Idrija, Cerkno, Tolmin and Nova Gorica, we are currently carrying out the workshops on playing the oldest flute. The workshops are intended for young musicians, who are students of music schools. The main aim is to familiarise workshop participants with the Neanderthal flute (or its reconstructed version) and to acquaint them, through practical work, with the techniques of playing this ancient instrument. Through creative exploration, participants are offered an insight into the earliest musical expressions of humankind and are encouraged to reflect on the connections between history, archaeology, and music. The workshop mentor, Boštjan Gombač, is a well-known Slovenian multi-instrumentalist, as well as a teacher and leader of numerous music workshops for children and adults. In recent years, he has been dedicated to playing the reconstruction of the oldest musical instrument – the Neanderthal flute – and to promoting it both at home and abroad.
