Slovenian film cycle in Italy – Ida, who sang ... in Gorizia

During the opening week, on March 19, 2026, at 8:00 p.m., at the Palazzo del Cinema – Hiša filma in Gorizia with Italian subtitles, the debut feature film Ida, so out of tune that even the dead woke up and sang along (Ida, ki je tako grdo pela, da so še mrtvi vstali od mrtvih in zapeli z njo), by director Ester Ivakič, will be screened. The event will take place in the presence of the authors.

Cinema is a beam of light that pierces the darkness of the theater and brings friends and strangers together in the same story. At the crossroads where history and everyday life intersect, the Slovenian Film Festival in Italy has for years been creating a space for two cultures to meet: contemporary Slovenian films transcend language barriers, enriched by Italian subtitles. The program features recent works, including award-winning productions from the Slovenian Film Festival. Each screening allows you to see the world from a slightly different perspective than usual.

The film had its world premiere at the Cottbus Film Festival, its Slovenian premiere at the LIFFe festival, and its Italian premiere at the Trieste Film Festival. Touching and poetic, the story follows Ida, a ten-year-old girl who grows up in the Slovenian countryside and believes that the mysterious angelic singing coming from the nearby cemetery keeps her grandmother alive.

The festival, organized by Kinoatelje in collaboration with the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Slovenians Abroad and Around the World, the Slovenian Film Center, and the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, renews its commitment in 2026 to connecting audiences, promoting intercultural dialogue, and supporting the dissemination of contemporary Slovenian cinema internationally.

Ida, who sang so badly that even the dead woke up and sang along with her (Ida, ki je pela tako grdo, da so še mrtvi vstali od mrtvih in zapeli z njo)

Director: Ester Ivakič | Slovenia | 2025 | feature film | Italian subtitles

Ida is a lively ten-year-old girl growing up in the Slovenian countryside, where she lives with her parents and her grandmother, her greatest support. When her grandmother's health suddenly deteriorates, Ida becomes convinced that only the mysterious singing coming from the nearby cemetery can help her. She decides to join the school choir, but her voice is so out of tune that she is rejected at the audition. Suspended between reality and the magical world, Ida must confront loss and the changes that come with growing up.
