Military guard tower - New exhibition opening
A new space of memory opens in Vrtojba: multimedia installation in a former guard tower
As part of the official programme of GO! 2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia Capitale europea della cultura, the Goriški muzej presents a new multimedia exhibition dedicated to life along the border that divided the Gorizia region in 1947.
The exhibition is housed in a former military guard tower in Vrtojba, now considered the smallest museum site in Slovenia. This symbolic location brings together the stories of soldiers, local residents and refugees, offering a human perspective on the impact of 20th-century political changes.
The exhibition path invites visitors to reflect on the meaning of borders and the consequences of historical decisions on everyday life, through an immersive and contemporary narrative approach.
On the occasion of the opening, a new guide to the “Museum on the Border” project will also be presented, available in Slovenian, Italian and English. It is edited by Rok Bavčar, who is also the author of the exhibition.
The initiative is supported by the GO! 2025 programme, the Municipality of Nova Gorica, the Municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba and the Slovenian Ministry of Culture.
The exhibition will be open from April 8, 2026, daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, with free admission via QR code.
In case of bad weather, the opening will be postponed to a later date.
