Milenko Pegan: Photographs

On the occasion of the opening of Milenko Pegan's photography exhibition.
From 4 to 30 June 2025, the Frnaža Gallery in Nova Gorica will host an exhibition of photographs by Milenko Pegan (1925–2005), one of Slovenia’s most important art photographers. The official opening will take place on Monday, 9 June at 19:00, featuring a musical recital and a presentation of Pegan’s life and work.
The exhibition and accompanying photo monograph were prepared by the Provincial Archives of Nova Gorica to mark the 100th anniversary of Pegan’s birth and the 20th anniversary of his death. The selection from his extensive photographic legacy, housed in the archive, was made by photography master Rafael Podobnik, while archivist Ivanka Uršič organized and catalogued the materials.
Pegan began his photographic work in the 1950s – initially as a military geodesist and later as a leading figure of the Nova Gorica photography school. He is known for series such as Psychological Portraits, Mediterranean, Reflections, Sumac, and Venice, in which he masterfully used black-and-white and color photography, often with innovative techniques (infrared film, microscopic materials, panoramic lenses).
He co-founded several photography clubs, mentored young photographers, exhibited widely both in Slovenia and abroad, and received numerous awards, including the Master of Photography title (FZJ) and Excellence FIAP.
Part of his legacy is preserved by the Provincial Archives of Nova Gorica, and another part by the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana.
