The exhibition experience is multimedia and interactive and is part of the broader Fondazione Carigo path on the theme of rights. It focuses on the revolution sparked in Gorizia by psychiatrist Franco Basaglia, supported by his wife Franca Ongaro and a visionary and enlightened medical staff at the end of the 1960s. This was internationally recognized as a true Italian “cultural revolution,” which culminated in 1978 with Law 180, permanently abolishing psychiatric hospitals.
The value of the exhibition project is based on two key aspects:
- Gorizia, where the "revolution of the mentally ill" began, and where Basaglia’s experience originated – the exhibition aims to keep the memory alive and reconstruct the pivotal events that allowed the experience to start here rather than elsewhere.
- Franca and Franco Basaglia, who speak throughout the exhibition in their own voices – captions are drawn directly from their writings, and the words for remembering and explaining are theirs.
On Friday, 14 November 2025, two guided visits will be reserved for congress participants at 16:00 and 17:30.
Visits will be available in Italian and English. Reservation is required at: https://DirittialCubo14novembre.eventbrite.it
