Charles X and the Bourbon Heritage

A comprehensive series of historical talks, guided tours, and open-house events across Gorizia and Nova Gorica marking the 190th anniversary of King Charles X of France and celebrating the shared Bourbon legacy.

Marking the 190th anniversary of the death of French King Charles X, entombed in the crypt of the Kostanjevica Franciscan Monastery, a major cross-border cultural event is set to explore the historical ties between the Bourbons and the Gorizia region.

The program kicks off on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at Kostanjevica Monastery with a historical debate featuring historians Dr. Renato Podbersič and Dr. Janez Šumrada.

Activities continue on Saturday, November 7, with special open doors and guided royal tours linking Coronini Palace in Gorizia, Villa Coronini in Šempeter pri Gorici, and Kostanjevica Monastery.

Visitors can enjoy historical documentary screenings, rare exhibitions of royal liturgical vestments, and free children's workshops.

The cultural week proceeds on Monday, November 9, at the Maks bookstore in Nova Gorica with a literary discussion on the French language featuring writer Aleš Berger and local high school students.

The series culminates on Tuesday, November 10, with the official ceremony "The King in the City of Roses" at the Nova Gorica Gymnasium theater, and concludes on Wednesday, November 11, with a solemn memorial mass at Kostanjevica.

The coordination of the commemorations has been undertaken by the Municipality of Nova Gorica, with numerous institutions and organizations from both sides of the border joining forces in preparing the program. The anniversary thus serves as an opportunity not only to revive historical memory, but also to strengthen cross-border cooperation.

All activities and guided tours are free of charge (advanced registration by November 5 is required for Saturday's royal walk via info@coronini.it).
