Sabotin Peace Park

Mount Sabotin rises 609 metres on the junction between the Goriška Region, the Soča Valley and the hills of Goriška Brda. Its long ridge serves as border Slovenian-Italian border. But in the World War I it was the backdrop of the infamous Battles of the Isonzo where soldiers of 22 nationalities shed their blood. Today, luscious vegetation hides the scars left by bullets and grenades. The entire hillside is perforated with a vast network of caverns and trenches, creating a one-of-a-kind open-air museum. You can visit it and pay your tribute accompanied by tour guides.

As cross-border peace park and part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic, Sabotin serves as great reminder of the absurdity of war and promotes the coexistence of nations.

A state-of-the-art multimedia centre has been set up inside the former border guardhouse on Mt Sabotin. Directly next to it is an eatery. The centre encompasses a museum, an information point and a host of war artefacts, marking an important stop along the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic. By showing the aftermath of the First World War and the Isonzo Front, the centre is a sombre symbol of the futility of war, promoting harmony between nations instead. The centre also hosts an informative display of the flora and fauna of this area, seeing as Mt Sabotin is one of the most botanically/floristically exciting and diverse mountains in Slovenia.

Mt. Sabotin is very popular hiking and cycling destination with breathtaking view all around.
