Church of St. Leonard, the patron of prisoners, Dolnje Cerovo

Church of St. Leonard, the patron of prisoners, Dolnje Cerovo
In Dolnje Cerovo, you can ask the local people about the origin of the thick chain around the Church of St. Leonard, patron saint of prisoners and all those who were imprisoned, and you will learn more stories about it. According to a village legend, there was a farmer in Dolnje Cerovo who transported wine by oxen. One day his oxen got stuck on the road and he could not go forward or back. In gratitude for his lucky escape, he had a chain forged, which still encircles the church from the outside, a unique feature. The year 1859 is engraved on the chain. It is impossible to predict how much truth there is in the legend, as it is preserved in several variants. St. Leonard to whom the church is dedicated, is the patron saint of prisoners and all those who are imprisoned. The church has a bell tower with “cine”, a Gothic presbytery and a Baroque nave and furnishings. The church is also surrounded by walls from where you can see Brda from all sides. The remains of the ruins of the former castle are also visible next to the church, where a picturesque staircase leads up. In the immediate vicinity, interesting stone masonry details that could be attributed to the castle's architecture were found during the demolition of the house, as well as a small purse containing 97 silver coins from various mints and countries dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
