The Misanthrope
“This staging is of prodigious beauty.” Andrée Shammah returns to Molière with The Misanthrope, "a love story, a possessive love, a neurosis. A more modern theme than ever."
A fresh edition of the work, a collaborative effort between Andrée Ruth Shammah, Luca Micheletti, and Valerio Magrelli, focused on the semantic praise of the word and its musicality.
The protagonist is Fausto Cabra: an Alceste, here in dark costume, at the center of a world populated by characters dressed in the same style but in different pastel colors, symbolizing a society diverse in form but standardized in substance.
An extraordinary company beside him.
On stage is the “desperate vitality” of a man alone in the face of power, alone in the face of the right-thinking.
The madman who is ridiculed by society, but in reality is the only one capable of grasping the madness of those around him. He would like to isolate himself within his ideals, but his beloved is unwilling to follow him.
It's a comedy about the impossibility of free expression when gripped by passion. A comical and deeply human drama, moving and ferocious, about the lack of communication and the terrible and laughable short circuit it generates.
