Hike to Mount Stol with Guided Birdwatching as Part of the ITINERANT Project | Soča Valley Hiking and Biking Festival

We invite you to a free guided hike from Breginj to the top of Stol, where we will learn about the rich natural heritage of this area through movement and experiencing nature. Special emphasis will be placed on bird watching, identifying them, and understanding their role in the natural environment.

The hike is part of the Soča Valley Hiking and Cycling Festival program and is organized in cooperation with the Municipality of Kobarid as part of the INTERREG ITINERANT project.

Participants will be accompanied by a local tourist guide, and the professional part of the program dedicated to bird watching will be led by a guide from the Slovenian Bird Watching and Study Association (DOPPS).

Birds are an indispensable part of the nature that surrounds us, but we often only notice them when we pay a little more attention to them. During the hike, we will learn how to recognize them by their appearance and calls, how they live, what they eat, and how we can observe them in a respectful way without interfering with their natural behavior.

Learning about birds is also an opportunity to better understand the importance of preserving the natural environment and biodiversity, and to discover how humans and nature can coexist in balance.

The hike is intended for everyone who wants to get to know the exceptional nature of the Stol area and discover its diverse wildlife in a sustainable and experienced way. DATE: September 19, 2026

MEETING POINT: Breginj pri koritu at 8:00 AM DURATION AND DIFFICULTY: 6–7 hours, medium-demanding hike EQUIPMENT: Appropriate hiking shoes, hiking poles if necessary, and enough food and drink from your backpack.

We also recommend using binoculars for bird watching, if you have them. They allow you to observe birds and their behavior more closely from a suitable distance without disturbing them.

A camera, bird identification manual and field notes are also welcome. We recommend wearing clothing in inconspicuous colors, as this will disturb the animals less.

During the observation, we will also ensure that there is as little noise as possible and a respectful attitude towards nature.

PRICE: Free. The number of places is limited. Applications are accepted until September 15, 2026 or until the vacancies are filled.

In case of bad weather, the hike will be cancelled. As part of the project, the Municipality of Kobarid carried out the rehabilitation of the road to Stol, thereby improving access conditions to the mountain area and promoting sustainable visits and preservation of the exceptional natural and cultural heritage of the Julian Alps.

As part of the project, the municipality is also developing conditions for a new sustainable tourism product - bird watching on Stol, with which it aims to bring visitors closer to the exceptional natural wealth of the area and at the same time promote responsible nature experience and the protection of sensitive habitats. The ITINERANT project is co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Programme.
