On Saturday, May 31, the next èStoriaBus is scheduled, taking participants to Kolovrat and Ragogna, offering a comprehensive geo-historical overview of the Italian retreat from the Soča (Isonzo) River to the Tagliamento River following the Austro-German breakthrough of October 24, 1917. The bus ascent to Kolovrat offers a bird’s-eye view of the Tolmin and Kobarid basins as well as the Krn mountain range. The location provides an excellent vantage point to observe the entire battlefield, including the seemingly impregnable but quickly overrun Italian defensive positions. This enables a virtually three-dimensional reconstruction of the breakthrough at Kobarid (Caporetto). In Ragogna, specifically in the Cornino area, participants will visit a museum that sheds light on a lesser-known but crucial episode of the retreat, often wrongly described as a chaotic flight: the desperate resistance of the Bologna Brigade. Additionally, the crossing of the Tagliamento River is contextualized within the broader mechanics of the retreat, carrying significant historiographical implications. In short, this excursion program offers many fascinating insights into the Caporetto events.
