Open-Air Cinema beneath the Solkan Bridge

The Lepotica pod gorami (Beauty Beneath the Mountains) will be screened on 8 July 2025 at 21:00 beneath the Solkan stone bridge – the largest stone arch bridge in the world.

There are few countries in the world that can boast such a scenic railway line as ours, running from Jesenice to Sežana. The line descends from the Alpine region toward the sea, and its beauty has impressed even the authors of the Lonely Planet travel guide for young adventurers.

This railway was the second major connection to Trieste. It arrived from neighboring Austria, pierced through the Karawanks via the Karavanke tunnel, approached Jesenice, and crossed the Sava Dolinka and Radovna rivers. It passed behind Bled and continued along the Sava Bohinjka. The Bohinj mountains are crossed via a 6,336-meter tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in Slovenia.

The route continues through the stunning Bača Valley, crosses the Idrijca River and then the Soča River. Just before Solkan, it crosses the Soča again – this time on the world’s largest stone arch railway bridge. It then follows the border with Italy, crosses the lowlands of the Vipava Valley, climbs the Karst plateau, and continues to Sežana. Before World War II, the line extended all the way to Trieste.

This railway runs through some of the most beautiful parts of our country. The mystery of tunnels, the wild rivers, and the surrounding natural beauty are captured in the documentary film Lepotica pod gorami (The Beauty Beneath the Mountains). Until 2017, a heritage train also operated on this line – one of its final journeys is featured in the film.

The film’s author, Matija Jerman, was a railway designer for 20 years, as well as a passionate photographer and documentarian. After early retirement due to disability, he turned his passion into documentary filmmaking. Lepotica pod gorami is considered his finest work.

The film will be screened on 8 July 2025 at 21:00, at the foot of the stone bridge in Solkan, the world’s largest stone arch bridge.

The event is part of the Kino Soča – Isonzo Cinema project, which has been establishing open-air cinemas at scenic cross-border locations since 2024, in collaboration with key regional partners.

The event is part of the Go Green Cinema initiative, supported by the European Union through the GO! 2025 Small Projects Fund under the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia 2021–2027 programme, managed by EGTC GO.
