ORIENTI - The River in the Sky

Alessandro Ambrosi, accordion and electronics

Amanogawa is the Japanese name for the Milky Way: a river that crosses the sky and does not remain there. It is from this image that the concert is born, and with it a gaze that Japan has cultivated for centuries: that of those who accept that everything flows. «Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home», wrote Matsuo Bashō.

The sound here does not tell of a place, but of the movement that passes through it: bells, water, air, recordings collected among temples and forests of Japan.

Amidst these soundscapes moves the accordion, which does not imitate that world and does not oppose it. Its breath comes from the same free reed that moves the shō, the ancient Japanese mouth organ, and makes it a sound body without a homeland. As in Yokoyama Taikan's painting, where outlines are lost in the fog, sound never quite defines.

It appears, transforms, retreats. A music that does not ask to be followed, but inhabited.

The program is taken from Ambrosi's album of the same name, recorded in Japan and released by Ricco Label. Before the concert free guided walk in collaboration with ICM – Institute for Central European Cultural Encounters.
