Miha Turšič: Atlas Slovenia—Environmental Significance

An exhibition on examples of environmental significane on both sides of the Nova Gorica border.
On Thursday, 28 August 2025, at 20:00, Xcenter will host the opening of the exhibition by Miha Turšič entitled Atlas Slovenia—Environmental Significance.
How to think about the environment when more than 90 percent of the Earth is inhabited and more than 75 percent is under the significant influence of human activity? The central mechanism that has led to such intense changes in the last two centuries is the conception of the environment as something exclusively useful. A similar attitude applies to environmental protection, a field that always concerns protection from human use and is in the human interest. Thus, the environment has long ceased to be something that surrounds us, but has become an integral part of society.
Atlas Slovenia explores the broader cultural significance of the environment through the use of environmental and satellite data. The project provides insight into the formation of landscapes, from the development of cadastres in the 19th century, through the impact of land use categories in the 20th century, to modern models for predicting environmental changes in the 21st century. The exhibition in Nova Gorica focuses on the broader Nova Gorica region on both sides of the national border and on local examples of environmental significance—from understanding nature to intensive exploitation. The project builds on the 'Planetary Public Stack' method, which interweaves comparative environmental concepts and modes of collaboration and the use of media technologies in the development of environmental representations.
