European Capitals of Culture – The Day After Discussion

What remains when the circus leaves town? This question will set the stage for a conversation between Saša Poljak Istenič and anthropologists Giustina Selvelli and Jaro Veselinovič, who have explored the European Capitals of Culture (ECOC) across different parts of Europe – from Plovdiv and Novi Sad to Rijeka and Nova Gorica.

Together with the audience, the speakers will discuss the conception, implementation, and legacy of these projects, examining the role of local institutions, the involvement of various communities, and the influence of the European Union in shaping the ECOC programme. How did cities imagine their future when they submitted their candidacies? And what remains after the ECOC year comes to an end? What continues to live on in these cities – and what fades away?

The discussion will take place in Slovenian and Italian, with simultaneous interpretation in both languages.

Participants:
Jaro Veselinovič, anthropologist (ZRC SAZU)
Giustina Selvelli, anthropologist and linguist
Saša Poljak Istenič, ethnologist (ZRC SAZU)
