Alexei Monroe / Sz. Berlin is a theorist, photographer, and audiovisual artist who has worked at the R.o.R. artist residency in Šempas.

Alexei Monroe / Sz. Berlin is a theorist, photographer, and audiovisual artist. He is a Research Fellow at the Burren College of Art in Ireland, and an expert in music and industrial culture, particularly renowned for his monograph on the music group Laibach. Under the pseudonym Sz. Berlin, he has exhibited his works at major artistic events such as the Time Machine Biennale, the second NSK Folk Art Biennale, Primal Uproar in Hamburg, and Bruital Uproar Berlin. His research focuses on themes such as the history of East Germany, Germany, Yugoslavia, and Ireland, as well as technical and architectural subjects such as Brutalism and infrastructure.

He has worked at the R.o.R. artist residency in Šempas and is participating in GO! 2025 by invitation from BridA, a partner of the European Capital of Culture since the creation of the Bid Book. The residency programme has provided him with a stimulating environment for producing original artworks tailored to the environment of Goriška.

"My work is primarily based on architecture, from which I gather information to create images, sounds, videos, and historical profiles," he said during the presentation evening at the BridA collective headquarters in Šempas. Through this project, he has explored the architectural space of Nova Gorica and Gorizia, mapping the most interesting buildings and transforming the images into sounds through an app. His main goal is to discover the different ways in which people perceive a particular building or space. He will approach the border area with particular sensitivity, exploring the thread that intimately connects the two Gorizias.
