Segreti sotterranei

Avventurati in un percorso guidato di oltre 4 chilometri sui campi di battaglia del fronte dell'Isonzo, seguendo i sentieri della Prima guerra mondiale e le grotte misteriose del territorio.

Join your guide on a mysterious 4.6 km journey through the battlefield area of the Soča Front, past war remnants, trenches, cemeteries, watchtowers, to the fascinating underground caves that sheltered and cared for soldiers during WWI. Walk through karst meadows and fields, past dry karst walls and the military railway.

This varied experience follows the paths of WWI and the mysterious caves that served as military shelters and hiding places underground. It starts at the Old School in Temnica in the Karst. The track between the dry Karst walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, first takes you to Spodnje Gmajna, a world of Karst meadows dotted with shrubs and groves, where you can listen to the starlings and birds.

The mighty stone embankment of the WWI military railway is a staging post for the first military stories. The railway line between Dutovlje and Kostanjevica in the Karst was built by the Austro-Hungarian army to supply the northern part of the Karst battlefield of the Soča Front.

For the first time, enter the mysterious underworld of the Karst in the Potato Cave, which sheltered as many as 500 Austro-Hungarian soldiers during the First World War. As its name suggests, it was also used as a potato storehouse, but even more interestingly, it was used as a telephone exchange, ammunition storage and water collection.

From the underground, you return to the military railway and walk through the village of Novelo, from where a track leads to two other large caves. The shape of the Klobas cave provides excellent natural ventilation for drying meat. During the war, the cave was able to shelter around 250 soldiers and the headquarters of an infantry brigade. The soldiers built bunk beds, a ventilation system and toilets in the terraces. The third cave is the Lojz Cave, where a special construction unit led by Alois Peter Bock ensured the safety against missiles and completely rebuilt the cave. As a result, it still has three floors, which could hide up to 1000 soldiers during the fighting.

After visiting the caves, we return to our starting point at the Old School, full of impressions.
